1914
  • Allan Brown organizes a fraternal organization of business and progessional men in Michigan
  • Nun-Kee-Wan-Is is adopted as the official name
  • Adapted from the Native American Otchipew expression: Nunc Kee-wanis
  • Translation: We have a good time or We make noise
1915
  • State of Michigan approves and extends a corporate charter to the organization
1917
  • Club forms in Canada, making the organization international
  • President Stats: 96 countries; 8,400 clubs; 280,000 members
1919
  • Club forms in Cleveland, Ohio
  • Begins a nursery school to serve underprivileged children
  • Kiwanis becomes dedicated to community service with a special concern for children
1985
  • Topsail Island Area Kiwanis Club founded on June 25
